Poppy seeds may be tiny (after all, it takes nearly a million seeds to make a pound), but they certainly have a large footprint in culinary circles! These versatile little gems have quietly become an essential ingredient in many of today’s most popular kitchen creations. Every day, people all over the world enjoy their green salad topped with a rich, creamy poppy seed dressing. There are many varieties that already contain these distinctive little seeds, but if you order your poppy seeds in bulk from Nuts in Bulk, it doesn’t have to end there; anytime you crave their light nutty flavor and crispy crunch, you can simply sprinkle a teaspoon or so into any dressing. They also provide a wonderful accent for your dinner rolls and savory breads; their smooth flavor really comes out with the addition of fresh butter. And as you move ahead to the main course, poppy seeds take center stage…

    5 stars
By Brian from Walkersville Maryland on January 20, 2014
This order can quick. I checked for freshness by seeing if the seeds would sprout and they did. The seeds had a very nutty aroma which is good....I've bought from other suppliers and they said fresh however their seeds did not sprout and they also didn't have an aroma so I knew they were old.
So far this company gets a 5 star in my book.

    Poppy Seeds.
A common flavoring in European and Middle Eastern foods, poppy seeds are usually added to baked goods to bring a little spice and crunch to breads and pastries. Long revered for their medicinal purposes, in antiquity poppy seeds symbolized honor as well as prosperity and fertility. On top of its protein content, poppy seeds are high in calcium, manganese, and iron, key nutrients for the prevention of diabetes, osteoporosis, and anemia. An excellent source of fiber and iron, poppy seeds are high in thiamine, a B-vitamin necessary for the proper functioning of the enzymes our bodies utilize to metabolize carbohydrates. The oil from poppy seeds offers a significant health bonus; specifically it’s an efficient delivery vehicle for chemotherapy drugs in patients with liver cancer. Poppy seed oil is also an excellent delivery vehicle for iodine. It’s been given to children and adults to stave off iodine deficiency which can manifest as goiter (a non-cancerous enlargement of the thyroid gland), or hypothyroidism (a sluggish thyroid). There have also been cases of mental retardation in the offspring of women who are iodine deficient while pregnant. The thyroid gland needs iodine to produce the hormones that control metabolism.

Although poppy plants come in several different varieties, we get commercial poppy seeds from the same variety that produces opium, and in the U.S., every part of the opium poppy is illegal except for the seed. Poppy seeds contain only trace amounts of the narcotic alkaloids found in morphine, codeine and of course, opium. While they only contain trace amounts of narcotic alkaloids, poppy seeds can be sufficient to trigger false-positives on drug tests. It can take 48 to 72 hours for these alkaloids to clear our bodies.

Lemon poppy seed chicken is one of those unique, hearty evening-meal dishes that sounds rather plain going in, but absolutely opens the eyes with its decidedly elegant flavor. Somehow the succulent chicken, fresh lemon and poppy seeds combine to transform the ordinary into the amazing—give it a try! There are many other ways to incorporate tasty poppy seeds into your diet (please see our Health Tips, below), but perhaps the most popular uses are found in the baker’s kitchen. Lemon poppy seed coffee cake, for instance, is a long-time favorite that brings together those two favorite flavors once again, this time in a sweet, decadently rich treat that will be the centerpiece of any breakfast or brunch. And of course, everybody knows the joy that comes from starting your day with the fresh, fragrant taste of a lemon poppy seed muffin! Tell the truth, now: are you hungry yet?
